Verre Eglomise is a reverse painting on glass technique that has been around since before the Romans, falling in and out of style; however, there has never before been a time where so many luminous materials can be combined in so many ways to create the vibrant intensity and depth that can now be achieved. Learning materials and their compatibility has been as fundamental to my art as sentence structure is to a writer. Since I was first presented with the challenge of restoring an eglomise panel from a Federal Neoclassical mirror I have been enamored by the translucent depth that glass brings to art. Starting in 2016, I decided to use the knowledge and experience I had about glass painting to create works that combined pop art impressionism with abstract expressionism. I wanted the works to vibrate with intensity of color and rhythm of pattern to create a visual dance to express the joy of being alive. I truly hope that you enjoy the glass art as much as I enjoy creating it.
For me, art is like prayer insomuch as beseeches us to take a moment to acknowledge the wonder of life by reflecting a glimpse of the earth’s incredible beauty and mystery. Art arouses our deepest feelings so we can see clearer into our own souls. It helps us dream, reflect, express love as well as wonder. It engages us and it connects us. It reminds us of what we cherish.
In addition to independent research and experimentation, I have studied art in universities, in commercial environments under master artists and superb craftsmen, as well as notable restoration artists where I was privileged to study historical paintings up close. I have owned and operated an art studio, Mary McHugh & Associates since 1984, and I have been acknowledged by Baltimore Magazine as being Baltimore’s Best Illusionist (trompe' l'oeil paintings) along with receiving recognition for distinction from Schuler School of Fine Arts. My work has ranged from large murals to portraits and it has been published in Southern Accents, Home and Garden Magazine, Baltimore Magazine, as well as the New York Times Arts Section.

All glass art objects are one of a kind and are painted on the inside of upcycled glass using different combinations of traditional lacquer and/or enamels, dyes and/or pigments combined at times with iridescent particles and/or metal leaf. Painting of vases and luminaries are then sealed with Art Resin, a food safe product in accordance to FDA 21CFR175.300 as long as the object does not exceed 120F. Although art objects are waterproof, they are not dishwasher or microwave safe (the painting often contains metals). Clean outside as you would any glass product and wash inside with gentle detergent and soft cloth when necessary. Avoid sharp objects coming in contact with the paint on the inside of the glass.
Luminaries are hand-painted glass using the same combinations and requiring the same care. When burning votive candles, layer bottom with glass pebbles or stones, place candle directly in the middle, and of course, never leave candles unattended. I have found that white(not amber or incandescent) LED battery operated votive candles available on Amazon work great to show off the colors in the translucent bowls. There are also changing color LED lights available which display beautifully how colors interact with each other.
Lamp globes have several coats of waterproof epoxy resin heat
resistant to 500 degrees added to the interior of each globe for finish and protection.
